Smartphones have greatly impacted our lives in positive ways, such as increasing our connectivity to others and allowing us to work and shop from almost anywhere. However, our dependence on these devices has increased as they become more integrated into our daily lives. This dependence can potentially reduce our ability to think and function in the real world. Our brains have limited capacity for processing and using information, and any additional demands on our attention can decrease our cognitive resources and impair our performance, as demonstrated by research showing that using a smartphone while driving or engaging in a deep conversation can impair reaction time and reduce safe driving.
